STAR WARS BOOK LIST
This is a simple list of all of the full-length Star Wars novels to date, in chronological order of when the stories take place, with the movies and TV shows also added for context. This list does not include most young readers' books, nor short eBooks that have been included in print editions of other novels. TV shows aimed at young children are also excluded. Books whose stories overlap within the same timeline are listed in recommended reading order based on my own judgement. Release dates are for the US - dates and availability may vary in other countries. Big thanks go to Once Upon A Galaxy for helping me keep up with new releases, and Wookieepedia for help figuring out some of the timeline dates. If you have any questions or feedback, you can email me at books@yodasdatapad.com. The Book List also has a Facebook fanpage.

(Find previous versions on the Wayback Machine)

Newly released (since last update):
  • Crimson Climb in the Classic Era
  • The High Republic: The Eye of Darkness in the High Republic Era
Upcoming titles added:
  • The High Republic: Tears of the Nameless in the High Republic Era (no cover image yet)
  • The High Republic: Into the Light in the High Republic Era (no cover image yet)
  • Season 3 of The Bad Batch TV show in the Prequel Era
Pre-existing titles added
As a revision to the list, I've chosen to add a few Legends titles that weren't included before, including four novellas (short novels) that were released only as separate books. eBook novellas that have been included print editions of other books are still not on the list, though I'm considering whether to add them in the future.
  • SkyeWalkers original eBook - the last Legends book ever released, available only as a free download (on the short side for a novel, but longer than other Star Wars eBook novellas).
  • The Dark Forces trilogy of novellas, in the Classic and New Republic Eras - unfortunately out of print, but of interest to completists (see last footnote at bottom of page for more info)
  • Star Wars: Clone Wars TV "microseries" (series of short cartoons) in the Prequel Era - seemed like it should be on there too if we're including New Canon TV shorts like Tales of the Jedi. It actually takes place across the whole period between Episodes II and III, but I think trying to divide it up by groups of episodes would be too complicated for this list.
Other publishing-related changes:
  • The High Republic: Tales of Enlightenment short story collection delayed from Dec. 2023 to Mar. 2024.
  • More specific release date for The High Republic: Temptation of the Force (June 2024, previously "Summer 2024")
  • Changed "Release date TBA" to "Status unclear" for previously-announced films A Droid Story and Rogue Squadron (which could become a TV show), because of doubt as to whether they're really still coming
  • The High Republic: Path of Deceit, The High Republic: Convergence, the Obi-Wan Kenobi TV show, and the Tales of the Jedi TV shorts are no longer categorized as recent releases.
Timeline adjustments:
  • Revised the asterisks and footnotes noting the complicated status The Clone Wars books hold in relation to Legends and the New Canon, and created duplicate listings for The Cestus Deception and Jedi Trial to show the two different versions of where they take place on the timeline (with or without shoehorning them into the chronology of The Clone Wars). All this should make things easier for those Legends readers who choose to skip The Clone Wars series because of its various contradictions with the rest of Legends.
  • Divided "The Clone Wars film and TV show" into multiple parts, to make it clearer where the related books in both Legends and the New Canon take place relative to the show (e.g. the early The Clone Wars tie-in books should be read after or during Season 1, and Dark Disciple after Season 6), and also to clarify their official status in relation to Legends and the New Canon. Added asterisk with footnote to make it clear they have a complicated relationship to the rest of Legends, and that certain readers may prefer to skip them.
  • Changed The High Republic: The Eye of Darkness from minus "~229" to just minus 229. Seems pretty clear that Phase III of the series at least begins at this year.

LEGENDS

These books are part of the original Star Wars Expanded Universe, and follow an internally consistent timeline. Newer movies and other stories aren't based on these books, and will often contradict them.

NEW CANON

The new standardized Star Wars "canon" includes all the movie episodes, The Clone Wars TV show, and almost all new stories since 2014. New stories, including the films, are coordinated to prevent contradictions between them.

* In 2012, The Essential Reader's Companion attempted to resolve contradictions between The Clone Wars series** and pre-existing novels by moving The Cestus Deception and Jedi Trial to the beginning of the Clone Wars period (Anakin Skywalker is already a Jedi knight at the beginning of The Clone Wars movie/show, but is still a padawan in The Cestus Deception and at the beginning of Jedi Trial). However, If you're skipping The Clone Wars movie/TV series and tie-in books (marked with a double single star [**] on the timeline), you can read The Cestus Deception and Jedi Trial in their original places, which will feel more consistent with the rest of the Legends books. The above timeline now includes duplicate listings for these two books: once for their 2012 relocation, and once for their original placement.

** The early tie-in novels to The Clone Wars movie and TV show have not been adopted into the new canon, even though the movie and TV series have. These books, marked with a double star (**) on this timeline, officially exist only in Legends. However, because The Clone Wars series contains many contradictions with the rest of Legends, and because it's not referenced by the other Legends books between Episode II and III (which were written before it), readers who are only interested in the Legends timeline can consider skipping the books marked with the double stars (**).

*** The Clone Wars movie and the first six seasons of the TV show of the same name (not to be confused with the Star Wars: Clone Wars microseries, which doesn't have "the" in its title) were released before the New Canon was created, and therefore were officially considered part of the same timeline now called "Legends". However, they contain many contradictions with other Legends materials, and later became a foundation for the New Canon timeline. They're included on both sides of the list above because they provide the context for The Clone Wars tie-in books (marked with a double star [**]), which are officially only part of Legends. However, readers who are only interested in Legends might consider skipping this series, including the movie, the TV show, and the tie-in books. The TV show's seventh season, which was released long after the last Legends material, can safely be considered "New Canon only".

**** The three Dark Forces books, which tie into the video game series of the same name, are often incorrectly assumed to be comic books, since they were originally published by Dark Horse Comics. In fact they're short prose (text) novels, with occasional paintings included as illustrations. Because they're shorter than most Star Wars novels and weren't part of the main publishing program, they're sometimes excluded from lists of Star Wars books. However, they're a well-established part of Legends lore, were printed as separate books, and were even adapted into audio dramas, so they probably have at least as much of a right to be on the list as the New Canon's original audiobooks do. Unfortunately they're out of print, and the second and third books can be expensive to acquire online - if you can't find them at a local library, you might consider skipping them (they're somewhat connected to the Darth Bane novels, and their main character later appears in The New Jedi Order, but in general the other novels don't reference them very much).
