Privacy Policy

This privacy policy applies to the website located at https://www.yodasdatapad.com (hereafter "this site"). It may not be applicable to activities related to our projects or business that occur via channels other than this website.

In particular, this privacy policy does not apply to the Star Wars Book Finder tool located at https://starwarsbooks.yodasdatapad.com, which is treated as a separate website for these purposes, or to our Facebook or other social media channels, which are subject to the terms of use and privacy policies of their respective platforms.

Updates made to this privacy policy on November 17, 2023:

  • Updated the "Email List" section: We now use MailerLite instead of Mailchimp to manage our mailing list for email updates
  • Deleted the paragraph under "Email Communications" saying that we might share information about you with other parties for the purpose of fulfilling your requests unless you opt out. I don't foresee any situation where we would need to do this without asking for your permission first.
  • Clarified that IP addresses are sometimes considered personal data, though they usually don't actually reveal your identity
  • Made various small edits for clarity

What data we collect from you and why we collect it

Email Communications

If you choose to identify yourself (or otherwise provide us with personal information) by contacting us using the email addresses published on this site, we may collect (and will retain) any personally identifying information, such as your name, email address, and phone number, and any other information you provide. We will use this information to try to fulfill your request and may use it provide you with additional information at a later time, or for the purposes of our own analysis.

We will generally not disclose such information to third parties, and we will never do so publicly or for commercial or marketing purposes. Examples of the ways we may share this information include storing data with third-party services who we trust to ensure your privacy, or in the form of anonymized statistics, or in case we are required to do so by law.

Cookies

"Cookies" are a type of file placed on your device to help websites remember who you are. This site does not use any cookies of its own, but the Google Analytics service and Amazon Associates program may place their own cookies on your device when you visit our site (see below), and the MailerLite system may place its own cookies on your device if you sign up for our email updates or visit any other web page related to managing your email subscription (also see below).

Email List

MailerLite (Current)

We currently use a service called MailerLite to manage and operate subscriptions to our email updates. Your email address is only shared with MailerLite if you willingly enter it into the "Get Email Updates" signup form or another form, or if you request for us to manually add you to the mailing list, or if you already signed up through the previous version of our signup form.

When you confirm your email address or follow certain links from our emails (such as an "unsubscribe" link), you will be taken to a web page controlled by MailerLite, which may place a cookie on your computer as described in MailerLite's Cookie Policy. If you do not subscribe to our email list and do not click the "Subscribe" button on our website, MailerLite does not place any cookies on your computer. It may still receive and store the standard, mostly-anonymous information that your browser sends to all websites, as listed in the "Our Host's Servers" section below. Any data collected from you by MailerLite is subject to MailerLite's privacy policy.

If you do sign up for our mailing list, MailerLite provides us with your email address, and may also share some limited information about how you interact with our email updates, plus parts of the information your browser sent to it, such as your IP address (see "Our Host's Server" section below for explanation) and what country you appear to be located in. We will retain this information for the purpose of providing the email updates to you, and for the purpose of analyzing our audience as a whole, for at least as long as you are subscribed.

MailerLite does not automatically delete your data when you unsubscribe, but we will make an effort from time to time to manually delete unsubscribed users from the database. If you want to make sure your data is deleted right away, contact us at rd@yodasdatapad.com. After your personal data is deleted, we may retain some aggregate, anonymized data about our audience that was created using your data, but this will not include any personally-identifiable information.

MailChimp (Previous)

We previously used a service called Mailchimp to manage and operate subscriptions to our email updates. Your email address was only shared with Mailchimp if you willingly entered it into the "Get Email Updates" signup form or another form, or if you requested for us to manually add you to the mailing list, before we switch mail services on November 17, 2023.

If you were subscribed to our mailing list prior to the switch on November 17, 2023, Mailchimp may have placed a cookie on your computer as described in Mailchimp's Cookie Statement. These cookies may expire on their own, and you can safely delete them now without any consequences. If you did not subscribe to our email list and did not click the "Subscribe" button on our website, Mailchimp was not able to place any cookies on your computer. It may have still received and stored the standard, mostly-anonymous information that your browser sends to all websites, as listed in the "Our Host's Servers" section below. Any data previously collected from you by Mailchimp is subject to Mailchimp's privacy policy.

If you did sign up for our mailing list prior to the switch on November 17, 2023, Mailchimp provided us with your email address, and may also have shared some limited information about how you interacted with our email updates, as well parts of the information your browser sent to it, such as your approximate location (only down to the city level). We may continue to retain this information for the purpose of providing the email updates to you, and for the purpose of analyzing our audience as a whole, for at least as long as you are subscribed.

For the moment, the email addresses previously stored in our Mailchimp account are still stored there as we transition to the new MailerLite service. We intend to eventually delete all of this information from that account once we've migrated it to MailerLite and are confident in the new system. We have already manually deleted any unsubscribed users from our Mailchimp list. After your personal data was deleted, we may have retained some aggregate, anonymized data about our audience that was created using your data, but this does not include any personally-identifiable information.

Google Analytics

Like most websites, we use a tool called "Google Analytics" to collect information about use of this site. Google Analytics collects information such as how often users visit this site, what pages they visit when they do so, what other sites they came to our site from, and which links they click on on our site. This helps us to learn more about who comes to our website, what they do on it, and how we can make the website better and help more people find it.

Google Analytics collects only the IP address assigned to you on the date you visit this site, rather than your name or other identifying information, and does not provide your IP address to us. We do not combine the information collected through the use of Google Analytics with personally identifiable information. Although Google Analytics may plant a cookie on your web browser idefinitely to identify you as a unique user the next time you visit this site, the cookie cannot be used by anyone but Google.

Google's ability to use and share information collected by Google Analytics about your visits to this site is restricted by the Google Analytics Terms of Use and the Google Privacy Policy. You can prevent Google Analytics from recognizing you on return visits to this site by disabling cookies on your browser or using a tracker-blocker browser extension.

Amazon Associates

This site is a participant in the Amazon Associates affiliate marketing program, which means that we may receive a commission for any purchases you make on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, or Amazon.ca within 24 hours after clicking a link on our website. The Amazon.com company may place a cookie on your device when you visit our website even if you don't click on any links, and may be able to identify you by connecting you with an Amazon account you have previously signed into on your device, or one you sign into after following one of the links. Data collected and processed by Amazon is subject to the rules of the Amazon Privacy Notice.

Amazon also shares some anonymous information with us about people who click the links on our site, such as which products people click on links to, how many people click on them, what they end up purchasing on Amazon, and how much they spent. For example, we may be able to see that ten people clicked on a link to the book Star Wars: Tales from Jabba's Palace, and that two of them bought it, one of them bought Yoda: Dark Rendezvouz instead, and one bought an iPhone and an $80 case of wine. However, Amazon does not tell us who any of these people are, and does not provide us with their names, contact information, or IP addresses.

We may use this anonymized data to track and optimize our earnings, which helps the site's creator to make a living.

Our Host's Servers

Just like almost every website on the internet, when you visit our site, you should assume that your computer automatically sends certain information to the servers that host our website, such as the:
  • name of the company that is providing your internet access;
  • type of browser software and operating system you are using;
  • date and time you access our site;
  • web address of any site where you clicked on a link to get to this site; and
  • current Internet Protocol (IP) address of the device you are using (this doesn't usually tell them anything about your physical location beyond what city or country you are accessing the internet from; the company you get your internet access from can use your IP address to look up your actual location, but usually keeps this information a closely-guarded secret).
None of the information listed above would normally reveal your personal identity. Though your IP address is sometimes considered a type of "personal data" or "personally-identifiable information", an IP address is only a piece of the puzzle someone would need to determine which actual person visited the website or took particular actions there, and it's unlikely it would ever help us or anyone else to find out who you are.

The servers that host our website are operated by VeeroTech Systems, LLC, whose use of this data is governed by their privacy policy. We may be able to access data collected by VeeroTech through these methods, but we will not attempt to do so unless necessary for maintanance or troubleshooting, or if we are required to do so by law.

We do not provide any of your data to VeeroTech ourselves, since none of the kinds of data we collect from you are stored on this site's web servers.

Other Third Parties

Besides those listed above, this site does not allow or help any other third parties to collect information from you or place cookies on your device. For example, we do not allow Facebook to track your visits to this site (though if you follow a link from this site to Facebook or another site that does allow Facebook tracking, Facebook might still be able to detect that you arrived there from our site - this is related to the way the internet works, and is outside our control).

Who we share your data with

This site does not sell your data or share your data with third parties for their own marketing, commercial use, or mailing lists. We will never allow anyone else to contact you without your explicit permission.

We may entrust third parties such as email services, backup services, and Google Drive (Privacy Policy) with confidentially storing, managing, processing, or analyzing data that we collect. The activities of these third parties are governed by their own privacy policies.

How long we retain your data

If you subscribe to our email list, we will retain your email address at least until you unsubscribe, and from time to time we will manually delete the data of all unsubscribed users from the database. Personal information provided to us by other means, such as in emails you send to us, may be retained indefinitely for our records unless you request that it be erased. Information collected by MailerLite, Mailchimp, Google Analytics, and Amazon Associates may be retained according to those organizations' own privacy policies (see above). Anonymous data that they provide to us about our audience may be retained by us indefinitely.

What rights you have over your data

You may contact us to request that we erase any personal data about you that is held within the control of this site. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes, nor does it include data held outside of our control by third parties.

How to contact us

You may contact us with any inquires about your data or privacy by email to rd@yodasdatapad.com.
